Sharing with friends- purpose built housing for women facing homelessness

'One of the groups most vulnerable to poverty and homelessness is older women. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, approximately 25% of single older women in Australia live below the poverty line. Many elderly women struggle to find safe, secure, and affordable housing, which can leave them in inadequate living conditions or sleeping rough. There is an urgent need to provide older women with dignified and co-housing options that allow them to live independently while still having access to support services.'

As the years go by, life’s unexpected turns can leave many older women in precarious situations, facing the harsh reality of homelessness. Whether it’s due to the loss of a partner, inadequate retirement savings, or rising living costs, older women are increasingly vulnerable. In response, purpose-built women-only communities have emerged as a powerful solution, offering not just shelter, but dignity, security, and a renewed sense of belonging.

These communities are designed with the unique needs of older women in mind, acknowledging that the experience of homelessness is different for them than for other populations. Safety is a paramount concern. Living in an environment where they are surrounded by other women provides a sense of security that mixed-gender shelters often cannot offer. The architecture of these communities often includes private or semi-private living spaces, communal areas for socialising, and access to essential services, all within a secure, supportive setting.

Beyond physical safety, these communities offer emotional and psychological support. Many older women facing homelessness are also grappling with the grief of lost loved ones, isolation, and the anxiety of uncertain futures. Women-only communities foster a sense of camaraderie and mutual support, where residents can form meaningful connections and rebuild their lives together.

Moreover, these communities often provide access to resources such as healthcare, mental health services, and financial counselling, helping women regain control of their lives. Many also include vocational training or volunteer opportunities, empowering women to engage with their communities and contribute in meaningful ways.

By focusing on the specific needs of older women, these purpose-built communities do more than just provide a roof over their heads—they restore hope, dignity, and a sense of purpose. In a world that can sometimes overlook the challenges of older women, these communities stand as a testament to what is possible when we design solutions with empathy and understanding.
