Eating for your age - How your nutritional needs change as you age

As we approach midlife, we'll experience a myriad of physical and emotional changes. One significant aspect that can be particularly challenging is the transformation in appetite, cravings, and weight management. It's crucial to address these concerns with sensitivity, as body image and weight can be triggering topics for many.

Throughout our lives, our bodies undergo natural shifts in hormones and metabolism. For women in their 40s and beyond, menopause plays a significant role in these changes. As someone who has always maintained a thin figure with ease, it can be alarming to experience weight gain and difficulty losing those extra pounds suddenly. This unexpected shift can cause a sense of unease, frustration, and self-doubt.

In addition to weight gain, many women notice a change in their appetite and cravings during this time. The foods we once enjoyed may no longer satisfy us, and we may find ourselves drawn to different flavours or textures. This change can be attributed to hormonal fluctuations and a general slowing of our metabolism. As a result, the exercise routines that worked wonders in our 20s might not yield the same results in our 40s.

On my recent trip to London, my mother complimented my appearance and preferred my fuller figure. As I'd been smaller most of my life, my fuller figure has taken some time to adjust. However, I've come to recognise the importance of embracing my body's natural changes as I age, and I appreciate my mother's wisdom on this subject.

My mother has always emphasised that our appetites and bodies evolve; this insight resonates with me now more than ever. As we navigate various life stages, adapting our perspectives and prioritising our well-being in ways that align with our current needs is essential.

Through this experience, I've learned that embracing a healthy weight for me might not necessarily mean maintaining the same figure I had in my youth. Finding comfort in my skin and embracing my body's natural changes has become an integral part of my journey towards self-acceptance and overall wellness.

While these changes are natural and common among women in our age group, it's essential to approach the topic with sensitivity. At Silver Sirens, we aim to create a safe and supportive space for women to discuss their experiences without fear of judgment. We aim to help women embrace their bodies at every stage of life with self-love and acceptance.

To manage these changes, consider the following tips:

  1. Nourish your body: Focus on consuming a balanced diet rich in nutrients, with plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.

  1. Practice mindful eating: Pay attention to your body's hunger cues and avoid overeating or restrictive diets.

  2. Adapt your exercise routine: Experiment with different workouts that keep you motivated, challenged, and engaged.

  1. Seek support: Connect with other women going through similar experiences, and don't hesitate to seek guidance from professionals such as nutritionists or personal trainers.

  1. Practice self-compassion: Embrace your body and acknowledge the incredible journey it has taken you on thus far.

Appetite changes and weight gain are common experiences for women as we age. At Silver Sirens, we believe in handling these topics with care, understanding, and sensitivity as we strive to empower and support women throughout their menopause journey.

When I want to criticise or judge my body, I remind myself that our bodies are capable of remarkable things, and embracing these changes with self-love and acceptance is critical to navigating this transformative time.
